Description
Ginetta Cars was founded in 1958 by the four Walklett brothers, the business being an extension of their passion for motor racing and, as a result, cars produced by the Company were predominately race or road/race. The G2 and G3 models had been aimed at the enthusiast who wished to build his own car, but the G4 model which was unveiled in 1961 was aimed at the club racer who wanted a cost effective weekday road car and a weekend racer. As well as road going sports cars, the Company produced single seaters like the G8 and G9, but manufacturing difficulties led to the projects being shelved. In the 80s, Ginetta returned to the kit car market with an updated G4 - the G27 - for which enthusiasm has never waned. Today the Company is owned by a consortium, but the aims remain much as they ever were; to produce innovative, capable and affordable sports cars.

"Ginetta Cars 1958-2007" is a Brooklands Books Limited Edition Ultra publication that features the most incredibly underrated British sports cars ever to take to the road. Like the other titles in the Brooklands Books line, "Ginetta Cars 1958-2007" follows the traditional format the publisher has long established of supplying reprinted material from the world's most popular automotive journals and magazines. All pictures here, including the front and rear cover photos are in black and white. Despite quite a few of the articles having been originally printed in color, the images transitioned to black and white very well with no loss of sharpness. While Britain has long enjoyed a prolific run of small sports car constructors, Ginetta is one that usually isn't the first name to come to mind amongst many enthusiasts today. This tome traces the history of the marque from its earliest offering, the G2, all the way to the G50 being built under LNT Automotive ownership. One can piece together the turbulent atmosphere that small factions like Ginetta existed in over the nearly five decades of history covered here.An excellent selection of articles has been compiled and includes a three part series from the autumn of 1971 run of Cars and Car Conversions entitled "Getting It Together" which depicts all the trials and triumphs of one building a G15 in their own garage out of the supplied kit from the Brothers Walklett. Other interesting articles on tap come in the form of "True Brits: Ginetta G33" appearing courtesy of the July 1991 issue of Performance Car, and "Track Test/Ginetta G12" appearing from the December 1966 issue of Sporting Motorist. The latter was a real treat and is one of three articles on the wild little G12.Coverage of the rest of the Ginetta line is good as well, with information on the F3 car, as well as the G26 being well represented. I did feel that the book was a bit over weighted with G4 and G15 pieces, but I suppose this is to be expected in terms of these models being a bit more popular. All in all a fantastic addition to any sports car enthusiast's book shelf.
